Summary/Objective

The Tax Manager is a professional position for employees who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and practice development abilities at the Tax Supervisor level. A Tax Manager is a CPA whose client responsibilities are second only to those of shareholders. Tax Managers are primarily responsible for client service and practice development within their area of expertise and for clients assigned to them.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintain an annual production level as set by the Board of Directors.

  • Maintain a minimum of 90% realization rate on work performed.

  • Stay current with the laws and rulings through reading literature and attending courses.

  • Recognize the various industries the Firm is currently servicing

  • Prepare budgets for all engagements and forward those budgets to involved staff.

  • Review all workpapers and work product before submission for further review.

  • Identify exposure areas in the engagements that need to be addressed.

  • Make recommendations regarding improved operations and efficiencies of the Firm.

  • Ensure that engagement work is completed within predetermined time budgets and plan.

  • Increase proficiency in special client services and business advisory skills.

  • Make recommendations regarding improving operations and financial position of the client.

  • Increase industry knowledge.

  • Exercise due professional care in the performance of all services.

  • Adequately plan and supervise the performance of all services.

  • Obtain sufficient relevant data to afford a reasonable basis for conclusions or recommendations in relation to all services.

  • Work directly with clients to meet their needs, while communicating the status of all clients to the managing shareholder.

  • Operate and manage for profit.

  • Ability to perform, supervise, and evaluate all administrative and professional functions of subordinates.

  • Complete tax returns on a timely basis to avoid unnecessary extensions.

  • Bill clients in a timely manner for engagements completed, including drafting invoices for clients, always striving to increase billable hours with “” service.  Complete written and verbal correspondence.

  • Examine and respond to client notices and inquiries from the IRS.

  • Assist in management of client deadlines and their engagement responsibilities.

  • Advise clients regarding effects of business activities on taxes, and on strategies for minimizing tax liability.

  • Ensure that the client complies with periodic tax payments, information reporting and other taxing authority requirements.

  • Research and document findings in complex technical matters.

  • Ability to perform all administrative and professional functions of subordinates.

  • Assume all responsibility for engagements, including deadlines and other decisions.

  • Handle all client engagements, regardless of complexity, in an efficient, timely and professional manner.

  • Extensive contact with clients, striving to meet their needs as creatively as possible.

  • Complete written and verbal correspondence. 

  • Accept responsibility for collections, budget preparation, staff evaluations, staff training and recruiting.

  • Achieve proficiency in special client services, including projection and analysis.

  • Represent the taxpayer before the IRS.

  • Effectively coordinate and set priorities for own work loads, balancing the demands of various shareholders and clients.  Responsible for a list of clients.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Tax Manager directly supervises all Tax Staff - I & II, Tax Senior, and Tax Supervisor positions. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Firm’s policies. Responsibilities include recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) in accounting from a four-year college or university, a fifth-year university program degree or a Master’s degree (M.S.), plus six to 10 years relevant experience
